The 18th Daihatsu ABC Badminton National Primary School Tournament

Minami Hokkaido Qualifying Tournament Report

Muroran-shi, a city adjacent to the famous hot spring, Noboribetsu Onsen, and also close to a number of lakes in Hokkaido like Lake Toya and Lake Shikotsu. During the two days from the 25th to 26th of June, the South Hokkaido The qualifying round was held at "Muroran City Gymnasium", an exercise facility commonly used as a base and popular amongst the citizens of Muroran-shi.
On the day, about 400 boys and girls ranging from primary 1 to 6 participated. In the gymnasium equipped with 8 courts, a heated battle ensued, where the ticket to the national tournament was on the line.

Amongst the many heated battles, the most memorable one was the finals for the Group B Girls. The match was one between a fourth grader and a third grader. While closely matched, the younger 3rd grader MIZOO took the match with a straight win and brilliantly clinched the ticket to the national tournament.

The Group A Boys Finals was also an intense, gripping fight. This match, which was one between ex-team mates, became a heated one because both party were well aware of each other's styles and tactics. Their strength were equal. However, Matsumoto, who researched on Mori and based his practise on it was able to get ahead of Mori, who showed fatigue from the continuous intense rallies from his semi-finals match. Matsumoto clinched victory with a straight game.

From Hokkaido Primary School Badminton Federation

Mr. Hiroshi Murata (Director of Muroran District Badminton Association)

Even when looking at it from a national scale, badminton is flourishing in Hokkaido. We have been putting in effort into strengthening and for the past three years, we conducted activities like inviting China's ex-national team coach to conduct training for us. We are aiming for a further level increase.
With support from Daihatsu this year, we have received drinks and cheering items from them. This managed to hype up both guardians and children. For sports at the primary school level, support from guardians is indispensable. Especially in Hokkaido, where the medium of transport is mainly cars, the guardians have to bear some burden. In this sense, I believe that services such as the free regular inspection conducted today are extremely meaningful support.

Hokkaido was experiencing a bad period in terms of weather, fortunately Muroran was blessed with comparatively good weather. By early morning, many people were lining up at the venue entrance, anticipating the start of the event. At the reception, Daihatsu staff provided drinks and stick balloons for cheering to the visitors and participants like the players, instructors and guardians. Statements of joy were made by some of the guardians who had come to support their children. "Till now, stick balloons were only available in big tournaments like the Japan League. Having these items provided even for a primary school tournament is good as it gets us hyped up." They said.
Also, we received large numbers of application for the special event, "Free regular inspection of your car". From the applicants of the inspection, we received some words. "It was a long distance from my house to the venue, and I was worried about the condition of my car on the way here. I heard that an inspection was going on here and thus I requested it for my car. Now I can drive back in peace." An applicant commented.

Life-sized cut-outs of the Japan representative players in their uniforms were placed at the venue. Participants and visitors alike happily posed in front of them. They were enjoying the other activities aside from the matches.
